Italy midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini suffered a muscle injury and is likely to miss Euro 2020 with Gaetano Castrovilli replacing him.

Pellegrini was precautionary rested during the last two friendlies, but that was not enough as, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he suffered a new injury at his flexors during yesterday’s training session in Coverciano.

The 24-year-old underwent medical examinations in the morning, which highlighted a muscle injury.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the FIGC asked UEFA to replace Pellegrini with Gaetano Castrovilli who has already arrived at Coverciano.

The Fiorentina midfielder will train with the Azzurri waiting for UEFA’s green light.

The FIGC confirmed to have submitted a request to replace the Roma midfielder.

“The FIGC has submitted a request to UEFA surrounding the possibility of replacing Lorenzo Pellegrini, who, in training yesterday, picked up an injury,” the official statement reads.

“He was taken for a scan this morning and will nonetheless remain part of the group, which will travel to Rome this morning. In anticipation of an answer from UEFA, Gaetano Castrovilli will join up with the group in Rome.”

Pellegrini’s injury is a major blow for Roberto Mancini, who had to drop Stefano Sensi due to muscle problems.

Marco Verratti is also not 100 per cent fit and could miss the first two games of the group stage.

Italy host the opening game of Euro 2020 in Rome tomorrow against Turkey.
