Lorenzo Pellegrini called Roma ‘a family’ after their 2-1 win in Cagliari and relished his sensational goal. ‘Everyone keeps telling me I can’t take free kicks.’

The captain was essential in Sardinia this evening, as his corner found Roger Ibanez for the equaliser after a Leonardo Pavoletti opener, then his free kick into the near top corner turned it around completely.

“We put some more intensity into the game after the break,” Pellegrini told DAZN.

Jose Mourinho, who was sitting out a touchline ban this evening, had said Roma could only really count on 13 players, but the captain is more inclusive.

“I cannot say the real quality of this group, time will tell on that. I can say this is a family more than a team and we saw that tonight.

“This was a response to all the ugly things that were said over the past week, we rolled our sleeves up, put in a great performance against Napoli and then got the three points today.”

A strong response to criticism was also the winning goal from Pellegrini.

“Everyone keeps telling me I can’t take free kicks, so I continue to practice and practice, this is the result. That’s what we are all doing, working hard in training to improve ourselves.”
