Lorenzo Pellegrini confirms he will not be taking part in Euro 2020 due to ‘this damn thigh problem,’ replaced by Gaetano Castrovilli.

The Roma midfielder was diagnosed with the muscular problem this morning and it immediately became clear he would not be ready to participate in the tournament, which kicks off tomorrow against Turkey.

“Unfortunately, this damn thigh problem will not allow me to play in the Euros,” wrote Pellegrini on Instagram.

“I feel such disappointment and bitterness right now, but this is also the moment when we must all come together even closer and cheer on this fantastic group of real men who I am sure will give their soul in every game from start to finish.

“I believe. Come on lads, come on Italy. All together.”

Fiorentina midfielder Castrovilli is a last-minute replacement and the call came just in time, because he had been due to fly out to the Seychelles with his girlfriend on Saturday.

His bags were packed and he was currently down in Puglia with his family, but is today travelling to Rome to meet up with the rest of the squad.
