Cremonese have gained promotion to Serie A, but coach Fabio Pecchia resigned, so Pippo Inzaghi is among the candidates to take over.

The club finished second in the Serie B table behind Lecce, so both are automatically promoted into the top flight for the 2022-23 campaign.

A third side will be promoted via the play-offs, which are currently in full swing.

Despite achieving this remarkable step up after 26 years, Cremonese coach Pecchia has decided to walk away.

“There is a moment in all our lives when we need to listen to our hearts and make a decision,” wrote Pecchia.

“It might seem unexpected, but I have decided to leave Cremonese and I do it with peace and gratitude. I thank President Giovanni Arvedi, who fully understood my state of mind and accepted my desire to end this extraordinary professional experience with promotion to Serie A.

“I leave with my heart full of joy and pride at writing an extraordinary page in the history of Cremonese. You will always remain in my fondest memories.”

According to Tuttomercatoweb, the favourite to replace him is Inzaghi, who has already worked with former Milan directors Ariedo Braida and Simone Giacchetta, now in charge of Cremonese.

Inzaghi was fired by Brescia in March, despite being in the top five at the time.

His previous coaching roles were at Milan, Venezia, Bologna and Benevento.
