Former Roma goalkeeper Pau Lopez claims he had ‘lost love for football’ at the Stadio Olimpico, but Marseille’s offer ‘came at the right time.’

The 27-year-old failed to justify his €23m price tag during his two-year spell in the capital, where he only kept 18 clean sheets in 76 games, conceding 93 goals.

Marseille loaned him from Roma last summer and made his move permanent in January.

“I had lost passion and love for football. I no longer had joy in training,” the Spanish goalkeeper told L’Equipe, talking about his time in Rome.

“I was happy only when I was leaving the training centre to return home with my family. Roma was a big challenge for me, it’s a club that plays in Europe every year, but there’s nothing you can do when you are not happy.

“I don’t watch football every day. I play because I like and I have fun, but it’s a job for me.

“Marseille arrived at the right moment and from the beginning, I found the enthusiasm I had lost.”

  1. Watching him play in goals made me lose my love for football. We will never forget that goal he gave Lazio, good riddance to bad rubbish.
