Former Roma and PSG midfielder Javier Pastore discussed the differences between Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, and also commented on the possibility of returning to Palermo.

The 33-year-old Argentinian midfielder has had a difficult few years lately, playing only four minutes of action this season for Elche. Pastore hardly made an impact during his last season with Roma, remaining sidelined after an operation, and injuries have started to derail his career.

Speaking to Sky Sports in Qatar, Pastore first discussed the differences between Messi and Maradona.

“They are different in the way they transmit leadership. They’re different, but the message is always the same, that of someone who always wants to win and always makes you improve. They are people who don’t let you pass a mistake, in training as in the match.

“They have the same thing, the way they communicate it is different, but the message is always the same, of someone who wants to be the best in the world.”

The 33-year-old midfielder then commented on if he’d be open to returning to Palermo.

“I don’t know, the truth is that I have now left Elche, we have decided to say goodbye. I’ve played very little so far and it wasn’t a good thing for me or for the club.

“I need to play, you never know. Palermo have fortunately gone up to Serie B, the team is recovering very well and I am happy for them.

“I spent two magnificent years of my career there, I always wish the best for them, the city and the fans. They have always shown me love.”

Pastore spent two years of his career with Palermo from 2009 to 2011, making 82 appearances across all competitions. During his time in the Sicilian capital, the Argentinian midfielder scored 16 goals and provided 16 assists, earning a €42m move to Paris Saint-Germain.

He later spent three years with Roma but a series of injuries left him unable to show his best.
