Palermo’s Alberto Gilardino could be in line for a sensational return to Parma, according to reports.

The 33-year-old scored 56 goals in 116 games across three seasons for the Ducali, scoring the goal which kept them in Serie A in 2005.

Following the club’s bankruptcy, Parma Calcio 1913 are on the verge of promotion to Lega Pro, the third-tier of Italian football.

According to Gazzetta di Parma, the Emilian club are looking for a figurehead for the journey back to Serie A, and have identified Gilardino as that man.

The newspaper cautions that such a move would be difficult, as the 2006 World Cup-winner has scored eight Serie A goals this season, and is clearly still able to play in the top-flight.

However, he retains affection for Parma, and could become a bona-fide club legend if he were to drop down the divisions to help out his old side.
