Parma suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Serie B side Empoli, while Hellas Verona won a 4-3 thriller against Slovenians ND Gorica.

There were 1,000 fans allowed into the Stadio Tardini, the first time a Serie A stadium has allowed supporters in since the COVID-19 lockdown, even if it wasn’t for a competitive match.

It didn’t go well for Fabio Liverani’s side, as Empoli emerged 2-0 winners with both goals in the first half by Leonardo Mancosu.

Gervinho wasted a couple of opportunities when one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but although the Ducali dominated the second half, they failed to find the net with Roberto Inglese and Mattia Sprocati.

Verona made their first pre-season friendly appearance of the season and it was a typically entertaining encounter with ND Gorica, who were just promoted to the Slovenian top flight.

It took Mathias Oyewusi just 18 seconds to break through, before Marco Davide Faraoni and Samuel Di Carmine’s penalty turned it around.

Mariusz Stepinski and Adama Sane completed the scoring for Verona.
