Reports emerged that players Emanuele Calaiò and Fabio Ceravolo had been interrogated for sending text messages to Spezia players Filippo De Col and Alberto Masi four days before the Serie B game that decided Parma’s promotion.
Today, Parma released a statement confirming Calaiò and Ceravolo did speak to the authorities in Rome and “were simply asked about the two text messages sent to their former teammates at Spezia in the days before the game.
“The tone of these texts, which Parma have been able to view and do not release purely out of respect for those doing the investigation, contains no irregularities or malice, as the players already clarified and we are certain will be confirmed by the authorities.
“Those whose job it is to ensure the fairness of the league have the right and duty to make any checks they consider necessary. This is why every director, player or employee of Parma Calcio 1913 is at the total disposal of the investigators should they wish to discuss any matters further.
“At the same time, we cannot help but stigmatise the details spread to the media in such a way that prevents those involved from defending themselves.
“Because the investigation is on-going, we are sad to say nobody on the Parma payroll will be able to make a formal public comment until the conclusion.
“Parma wish to reassure its fans that this investigation will show the promotion was a fantastic achievement thanks to hard work, sacrifice and exemplary professionalism of the club and its players.”
Beating Spezia alone would not have been enough to secure promotion for Parma, as Frosinone also had to drop points in their 2-2 draw with Foggia, played simultaneously.
