According to Sky Sport Italia, Monza have agreed terms with free agent Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez and he will undergo a medical tomorrow, making his return to Serie A.

The transfer window has closed, but clubs can still sign players who are out of contract.

Gomez saw his deal with Sevilla come to an end on June 30 and has been waiting to decide on his next step, which included interest from Saudi Arabia and France.

The 35-year-old Argentina international spent much of his career in Italy, first for Catania from 2010-13, then for Atalanta from September 2014 to January 2021.

He was sold to Sevilla following a row with Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini, having made 252 competitive appearances for La Dea, scoring 59 goals and providing 72 assists.

Monza had already been linked with Gomez earlier this season, but were prompted to take the plunge after Gianluca Caprari was ruled out for six months by an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

It will be a contract to the end of the current campaign.
