Monza coach Raffaele Palladino confirmed that Alejandro Papu Gomez had his appeal against a two-year doping ban rejected.

The 36-year-old Argentinian forward, who was a fan favourite during his time in Bergamo with Atalanta, was handed the suspension back in October 2023, just days after joining the Biancorossi on a free transfer.

Papu Gomez explained the source of the positive doping test, claiming that it was because of some of his child’s cough syrup – which contained terbutaline – given to him by his wife Linda Raff after he returned home from training with a cough back in 2022 during his time at Sevilla.

Strangely, his failed doping test was produced before he joined the Argentina squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, allowing him to be part of the title-winning team.

Speaking in a press conference via TMW ahead of Monza’s clash with Genoa, Palladino was asked about the Papu Gomez situation and if there were any updates.

“The appeal was rejected, from what I know. The team will announce it.”
