Former Milan striker Jean Pierre Papin compares Milan and Newcastle United target Sven Botman to Jaap Stam and explains why he’d be ideal for the Rossoneri.
Both Milan and Newcastle are pushing to sign the Netherlands international in the summer, but while the player would like to join the Rossoneri, the Premier League side have made a better offer, so negotiations are stalling at the moment.
Papin, a 1991 Ballon d’Or winner and a former Milan striker, has seen Botman in action many times with Lille and believes that he’d be an ideal signing to strengthen Stefano Pioli’s defence.
“Botman reminds me of Stam. He is strong and powerful, values that an Italian defence needS,” the ex-striker told Sky Sport Italia.
Stam spent two seasons at Milan, from 2004 until 2006. He also played for Lazio and Manchester United.
The Rossoneri seem closer to signing Botman’s teammate Renato Sanches who is expected to sign with the Rossoneri in the coming weeks.
“I think he can play in any team in the world, he can adapt quickly,” said Papin. “He must improve going box-to-box, but there are many players with this characteristic at Milan, so he’d be perfect.”
However, there is another starlet that Papin would sign: “The best young player I saw last season was Faivre. To me, he is one who Milan should sign.”
The Rossoneri have welcomed many French players over the last few years, including Mike Maignan and Theo Hernandez and the next one will be Amine Adli.
“Maignan is strong and I believe that the title can give him even more,” Papin claimed.
“Theo’s surprised me. I knew his brother [Lucas], but he arrived quietly and now he is one of the best Milan players.”
