Former Inter general manager Ernesto Paolillo is worried “UEFA will only make a decision to postpone Euro 2020 when there’s the first Coronavirus case in an important team.”

Serie A has been halted until April 3 due to the pandemic, with games either played behind closed doors or suspended in Spain, France, Germany, Austria and Bosnia.

Serie A has been halted until April 3 due to the pandemic, with games either played behind closed doors or suspended in Spain, France, Germany, Austria and Bosnia.

“I think the moment has come when everyone has to make the necessary decisions,” ex-Inter chief Paolillo told TMW Radio.

“It’s unthinkable that we could continue like this, with one team playing and one that isn’t. We’re creating chaos. The wisest decision and one to get across the gravity of the situation would be to block all sport. If people keep carrying on as if nothing is happening, they will underestimate the dangers of everyday life.

“Nothing that bad would happen if we postponed Euro 2020. It’s a big decision, but it has to be done. I realise there are many interests involved, that it would be costly to certain investments, but the risk right now is that UEFA will only make a decision when there’s the first Coronavirus case in an important team.

“We should ask ourselves, do we really want to wait until that moment?”

With so many leagues suspending games, they won’t have time to play the remaining fixtures because Euro 2020 is due to begin in June.

“The sporting solution would be to find a way to continue the season later and postponing Euro 2020 to next year would be a positive contribution to that,” added Paolillo.

“Any other option would end up causing more trouble. If we have to wait for the Lega Serie A and 20 clubs to work out which is the best way to assign the Scudetto, we’ll never get out of it.
