Christian Panucci has claimed that the situation at former club Roma is ‘becoming untenable’, with an owner ‘who doesn’t know what’s going on’.

Although Roma are within touching distance of a Champions League place, they are a mess off the field as sporting director Gianluca Petrachi is suspended and President James Pallotta is struggling to find a buyer.

“It’s becoming untenable,” Panucci, who played more than 300 times for the Giallorossi between 2001 and 2009, told Sky Sport Italia.

“The internal situation at the club seems like a powder keg, seen in part by Petrachi’s dismissal.

“There’s an owner who’s never around and doesn't know what’s going on, and that’s a big problem for a demanding club like Roma.”

However, the ex-Italy defender praised them for trying to bring in Pedro from Chelsea and urged them to hold on to Lorenzo Pellegrini, who has ‘world-class potential’.

“He’s a great player who knows what it means to win, what it means to train to win.

“He can help several of Roma’s young players. He’s a good signing.

“[Pellegrini] is a proper player, he sees the game before anyone else. He’s a player with world-class potential.

“I like him very much, he has great character.”
