Panucci made over 300 appearances for Roma as a player and had been linked with replacing Eusebio Di Francesco before Ranieri was confirmed as caretaker.

“No-one ever called me, there was no kind of call from the club,” the former Italy defender told Radio Anch’io Sport.

“Ranieri? He knows the club very well, he’s Roman himself. He can be a good doctor, so I think he’s the right choice for his experience.

Milan aren’t much better than Roma. It’s important for Roma to regain balance and start over.

“They have the quality to finish fourth but need steering. The atmosphere at Roma is one of the most beautiful in the world, but we must have the strength and character to react.”

Panucci has been at the helm of Albania’s national team since 2017, so what does his future hold?

“I’m very happy with Albania and I have a contract until November, but after that I don’t know what’ll happen,” admitted the 45-year-old.

“I’ve always made decisions with my gut. I really like this job, I’ve worked on improving my management of a group.

“I’m very focused on Albania. The rest counts for very little.”
