Goran Pandev says Genoa directors were happy to see him leave in January and confirms he won’t play against Italy in March.

The 38-year-old joined Parma from Genoa in January after a six-year spell at Marassi. However, his departure from the Grifone left a bitter taste in his mouth.

“I didn’t sleep for four days after I left. They made me understand that they no longer needed me,” he told Il Secolo XIX.

“So, I took a decision that made me feel still alive. We are behind in the table at Parma, but we believe in the play-offs. Gigi Buffon is happy to have me here.

“The change of ownership at Genoa created confusion,” he continued. “It was like having two different clubs and the most experienced players were blamed for bad results.

“When I went to the club headquarters, I saw people happy to see me leave. Nobody ever told me: ‘Stay here, help the lads.’ They told me that if I had decided to go, I should have done it. You could tell that they were happy, so I decided to get out of their hair.

“I still feel as I was at Genoa. I’ve never been to a club for so long. If we win at Venezia, then we have chances to gain survival. I have hope in Destro, a real hitman, but the others need to help him.”

The striker has confirmed that he won’t take part in the World Cup play-offs against Italy in March: “No, I won’t be there.”
