Gabriel Paletta says he just needed “trust and consistency” at Milan after returning from his loan move.

However, new Coach Vincenzo Montella has often included him in his side, with Paletta playing four Serie A matches so far, missing the other through suspension.

Gabriel Paletta says he just needed “trust and consistency” at Milan after returning from his loan move.

The centre-back was signed by the Rossoneri in January of 2015, but was shipped out on loan to Atalanta last summer.

However, new Coach Vincenzo Montella has often included him in his side, with Paletta playing four Serie A matches so far, missing the other through suspension.

“I needed trust and consistency,” Paletta explained to Corriere dello Sport.

“I came back with the idea of staying. I was convinced that if I was given my chance I’d be useful.

“I’m going through a good period. I repeat, all I needed was consistency. And in contrast to last year I had the advantage of playing all the pre-season friendlies.

“Sinisa Mihajlovic? I got injured in the first week of pre-season and when I came back he had already chosen the starting pair.

“There were a lot [of defenders] and I wanted to play, so I went to Atalanta.”

Paletta was then asked about the impact Montella has made since he arrived from Sampdoria in the summer.

“As soon as he arrived he told us that the key thing was to be a team and to be united. He taught us to work as a team and not as individuals.

“It’s through thinking as a collective that individuals can emerge, and I think that you’re starting to see that on the pitch here now. Then we can improve again, the margins are there.

“I think it takes a bit of time to learn certain movements, now we’re succeeding in that more than before.”

The Diavolo now face a tough trip to face Fiorentina.

“Without consistency in our results we won’t go anywhere, and we’ve only just begun,” Paletta cautioned.

“We’ll have to be very careful in Florence, because they’ve been playing together for a long time. It could be a turning point game, we always need perspective on our consistency and our objectives.

“These are the games that can decide the direction of the season, and of course it’s always easier to work during the week when you win.”
