Italy won their fourth World Cup on this day 17 years ago, beating France on penalties in Berlin.

The Azzurri lifted their fourth World Cup 17 years ago today with Marcello Lippi in charge.

They went 1-0 down in the first half through a penalty kick converted by Zizou Zidane, but Marco Materazzi quickly levelled the score by outjumping France’s defenders from a corner kick.

Zizou and Materazzi would take centre stage in the extra time when the Blues legend headbutted the Italian receiving a straight red card in the last game of his career.

David Trezeguet missed a penalty kick in the shootout, while all Italian players converted from the spot. Fabio Grosso scored the decisive goal helping the Azzurri win the trophy.
