That option will become obligatory if certain targets are met, but they are believed to be extremely tough ones to achieve.
These include winning the Serie A title or Champions League.
Napoli needed a goalkeeper with experience who was reliable, but not one so expensive as to scupper the growth of Alex Meret.
The Partenopei invested €22m in signing the 21-year-old from Udinese, plus €3m in bonuses, but he fractured a bone in his arm during his second training session.
As Meret won’t be ready to return until at least next month, they needed a suitable replacement for tough early Serie A and Champions League fixtures.
Ospina fits the bill, as the 30-year-old Arsenal man is available on loan and eager for a move after Bernd Leno (who had been in talks with Napoli before they opted for Meret) arrived in London.
