Victor Osimhen says he is still in talks for a contract extension: ‘For now, I am a Napoli player, we’ll see what happens.’

The Nigerian forward, last season’s best scorer in Serie A, started the new campaign on the right foot, scoring a decisive brace in a 3-1 win over newly promoted side Frosinone.

“It was important to start well, congratulation to the team,” Osimhen told DAZN.

“The opponent gave us a hard time, they are a good side. We have a great squad, and I am happy with this win. I’m happy I scored two goals, we must keep this momentum.”

Osimhen has been linked with leaving the Partenopei this summer, despite a price tag close to €200m. It’s not a coincidence that mostly Saudi Pro League clubs approached Napoli and their star striker.

“There was a lot of speculation which is true,” admitted Osimhen.

“The president is the boss. We are still negotiating [over a new contract], we’ll see at the end of the transfer window. For now, I am a Napoli player which is the most important thing. I will give my heart and soul to this team as I’ve always done in the past. We’ll see what happens.”

Osimhen’s agent Roberto Calenda started negotiations with Napoli a few months ago, but the two parties are yet to reach a final agreement. The striker’s contract at the Stadio Maradona runs out in June 2025.

Napoli boss Rudi Garcia has recently compared the Nigerian forward to Cristiano Ronaldo, especially for his importance inside the dressing room.

“What can I say? It’s important for the coach to believe in me, it’s also important to repay the trust on the pitch,” said Osi.

“Everyone’s the leader, we have to take responsibility. We have Di Lorenzo, the captain, Mario Rui, Meret. As I said, we are one group. We want to keep on improving.”

Naoli’s next Serie A game is against Sassuolo at the Stadio Maradona on Sunday August 27.
