Daniele Orsato has been named the best referee at the World Cup in Qatar, winning the Premio Internazionale Giulio Campanati.

Orsato oversaw three games in Qatar, the opening match between the host country and Ecuador, Argentina-Mexico in the group phase and the semi-final between the Seleccion and Croatia, won 3-0 by Leo Messi’s side.

Orsato has now been named the best referee in the tournament. The Premio Internazionale Giulio Campanati was established after the Brazil World Cup in 2014 in memory of former international referee, AIA chief and UEFA director Campanati who had died in October 2011.

It is organised by the Association ‘Amici di Giulio Campanati’ and the AIA section of Milan and names the best official at the World Cup and the Euros.

Former Serie A referee Nicola Rizzoli won the same award in 2014 (Brazil World Cup) and 2016 after the Euros played in France.

The ‘foreign’ winners of the award are the Argentinean Nestor Pitana (World Cup 2018) and the Dutch Bijorn Kuipers who was named best referee for Euro 2020.
