Just days after his controversial performance in the Champions League, Daniele Orsato has been named the best referee in the world for 2020.

Orsato came top of the survey organised by the IFFHS (International Federation of Football for History and Statistics).

“With 150 countries of all continents represented in the Federation (selected football journalists and historians), the IFFHS is recognized in the Football World for his knowledge and independence.”

This is the 33rd edition of the IFFHS Awards, which began in 1987.

Orsato had run into controversy in the British and French media after Manchester United’s Champions League defeat to PSG, in which he sent off Fred far later than he should’ve done.

The 45-year-old official from Vicenza also oversaw the 2019-20 Champions League Final between PSG and Bayern Munich.
