Orsato criticised for ‘worst officiating of the season’

Referee Daniele Orsato has been heavily criticised for his work in Milan’s 2-0 win over Atalanta yesterday.

Corriere dello Sport details how the 46-year-old Italian referee, who is often lauded as one of the better officials in the league, had a disastrous evening yesterday at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, missing a number of clear fouls throughout the match.

One of the most egregious missed calls came in the 56th minute, in the build-up to the Rossoneri’s first goal; Pierre Kalulu seemingly fouled Matteo Pessina in order to regain possession, but nothing was called by Orsato. Another contentious moment is the outside-the-box contact between Berat Djimsiti and Olivier Giroud, which also wasn’t called as a foul.

The game was also not allowed to flow nicely and 22 fouls were called, making the missed calls even more puzzling.

The topic of poor officiating has become increasingly heated this season and matches like yesterday only further infuriate the fans.
