Referee Daniele Orsato has been heavily criticised for his work in Milan’s 2-0 win over Atalanta yesterday.

Corriere dello Sport details how the 46-year-old Italian referee, who is often lauded as one of the better officials in the league, had a disastrous evening yesterday at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, missing a number of clear fouls throughout the match.

One of the most egregious missed calls came in the 56th minute, in the build-up to the Rossoneri’s first goal; Pierre Kalulu seemingly fouled Matteo Pessina in order to regain possession, but nothing was called by Orsato. Another contentious moment is the outside-the-box contact between Berat Djimsiti and Olivier Giroud, which also wasn’t called as a foul.

The game was also not allowed to flow nicely and 22 fouls were called, making the missed calls even more puzzling.

The topic of poor officiating has become increasingly heated this season and matches like yesterday only further infuriate the fans.

  1. I don’t necessarily agree with his calls from yesterday’s, but he was consistent. It started with the uncalled foul on Giroud. Fine. So the soft call Atalanta seeked on Kalulu is very much justified to be waved off!

  2. same kind of goal milan scored in the derby where the giroud foul was not called. genious tactic from pioli

  3. Neither the Giroud in the box was a foul nor Pessina (Kalulu didn’t even make contact)
Total click bait. He was pretty fair for both sides. Rubbish article.

  4. Only in serie A, that’s why no one watching it anymore especially decade when Rube has all referees favour in their pocket

  5. In every single game in Italy the referee takes centre stage …….. after the match!!!!

The team that loses the game blasts the referee – the one that wins, is happy ……

WILL THIS CHARADE EVER END BECAUSE IT IS GETTING RIDICULOUS, BORING AND IRRITATING ……. there are suspicions, doubts, misgivings about each and every game …… this is too much …..

  6. Neither of those incidents that Orsato didn’t call for were anywhere near fouls. Giroud threw himself over out of the despair at his lack of relevance in the game and Kalulu plain never fouled Pessina.

  7. The tackle on giroud was outside the box but definitely a foul. He was kneed in the hip. Tackles by Kalulu and then Krunic was beautiful. Krunic made some brilliant last ditch tackles in the second half – one brilliant one on Boga as he got into the box. Some people desperately looking for attention it seems.

  8. In the same way that in Europe we eat horses or haggis or snails. It’s a negative and unnecessary stereotype, based on a small number of people on a continent that has 60% of the world’s people. He also told them to watch cricket, which is another stupid stereotype based on a completely different part of the world.

  9. @Forza AC.

Spot on. Let’s even ignore fouls, penalties, and decisions for opposing teams. What can’t be ignored is the handball goal scored by Udinese in the 1-1 draw at home. Had VAR done their simple job, the league would’ve been wrapped up yesterday.

  10. Why am I not surprised Corriere dello Sport criticising the ref in which Milan came out on top? As I said, from the media, press, liga.. It will be a big achievement if despite all these working for Inter, we win.

  11. It’s hilarious to see Milan fans ignore their ref favours and only talk about others.

What about the game Vs Lazio where tonali scored the winner after an obvious foul? What about against Roma? What about against numerous other teams?

Milan have gotten plenty of ref help.

  12. Samy, I could said bad word to reply you, but I wouldn’t because it is bad to argue with kid.. just don’t give up on education kid, and don’t forget to do your homework

  13. Azzkikr are you ok? If those were fouls against Lazio and Roma then we should really reconsider how football works in general. I bet the next thing you’ll be thinking of is that Radu and Terracciano are bought by Milan too?
Asian fans and its good to argue with adults? You came in a with a ridiculous comment and you keep talking I don’t know for what.. Go do something productive with your time son.

  14. that two are fouls. period. there’s no debate. when milan are given advantage by the ref, they are just silent, not complaining like few months ago. such a bull team

  15. Honestly speaking, I felt we were hard done by at HT. Atalanta should’ve probably had a card, and although Giroud reacted slightly over the top, I felt a yellow was harsh, as he quite clearly got a knee in his back. Equally clear was the foul by Kalulu as he did impede Pessina, but considering the precedent, letting the play flow under those circumstances cannot be too heavily criticised. Yes Milan didn’t get the dangerous free kick and even got the yellow and yes they scored after a similar foul. Take nothing away from Leao for scoring a brilliant goal that was no where near in the net when he got the ball. Musso could’ve done better, but what a goal. Concerning goals, Hernandez, WHAT A GOAL! I think Milan deservingly won yesterday and credit to them team for that. As for Orsato, maybe he should’ve given Atalanta a yellow in the first half and Giroud a free kick with whatever the appropriate consequence for the Atalanta defender. And likewise Atalanta the free kick at the other end and an disallowed goal. Nevertheless I think Milan would’ve won it regardless. Forza Milan! Sempre!!

  16. I’m not surprised by corriere dello sport, they have serious issues with Milan and I can provide multiple proofs for anyone interested. They always have a go at Milan after most matches or even the whole Dollarumma situation.

Now, if we’re gonna talk about ref errors we have to take obvious errors which most of the experts/newspapers agree on not what some biased fans think is a error (which were not) examples : Giroud non foul on Sanchez when he clearly wins the ball and it’s obvious from the slow motions, or Tonali’s goal against Lazio which is never a foul, Acerbi was going down all by himself.

Now to the obvious errors which everybody agrees on : Udinese scores with a handball and it costs Milan 2 points. Ref fails to play the advantage against Spezia and Milan lose 3 points. Kessié scores a perfectly good last minutes equalizer but they call an offside for … something versus Napoli. Ranocchia fouls Belotti for the most obvious penalty visible from the moon only for the ref AND the VAR to turn a blind eye. Inter gain a crucial point.

Any single one of the above incidents would have resulted in Milan being already Champions before the Atalanta match. Orsato didn’t whistle for a blatant foul on Giroud when Djimsiti kneed him in the hip, and he didn’t whistle for a at best half-foul in the build up to Milan’s first goal. Was he not consistent at least?

I remember clearly how Barella stole the ball with a clear foul just last week on Inter’s second goal against Empoli, which the ref let go and VAR did the same. Who knows what could’ve happened if Empoli had gone into the break with a 2-1 lead?

  17. Dollaruma, so you never been arguing with anybody kid? laugh so hard read your statement.. maybe get a real job will makes you less hypocrite

  18. Finally somebody doesn’t call every single little bit of contact and let’s the players be men (this is also much more in line with CL and premier league officiating) and he gets a ton of flak for it… ridiculous.

This is the problem with the modern game, all these divers and sissy fans who want all contact no matter how small called as a foul. Let the players play, it’s best for the game going forward. The amount of fouls has gotten out if hand and needs to stop.

  19. I was at the match, there was nothing wrong, just the usual media drama and keyboard warriors commenting.

  20. Imagine if Milan score a goal and it gets disallowed like most Inter goals they scored that were rightly disallowed. The challenge that led to a goal was a clear foul but Milan fans are 100% sure there wasn’t even a contact. Then go ahead to say he was consistent. Out those 22 fouls most were for Milan players who went down at the first opportunity but Atalanta get nothing. It wasn’t a surprise that Milan fans were not complaining about the refs because the guy was clearly favouring them from the beginning to the end.

  21. Unbelievable. There is nothing in this article and someone at Corriere Dello Sport needs to get their eyes checked. Yet, look how many comments.

Orsato is one of the best and an Inter fan… in any other country he would be lauded for his performance.

  22. So many tears from haters. Giroud was fouled, nothing to see here. Pessina dive a-la-Barella, Kalulu should be sent off. LOL at you. I know it is difficult to swallow that Milan is near the championship with terrible decisions against him and an inferior team compared to 2-3 teams, but please don’t be so evident and silly

  23. Some moron wrote Orsato is an Inter fan? Yes that is why he didn’t send off Pjanic in Inter v juve 2017-2018. Talk about clueless posting

  24. Inter fans and pro-Inter journalists grasping at straws.
Now explain how come VAR chose not to give a Penalty to Torino when your defender CLEARLY kicked Belotti’s leg first before making ANY contact with the ball in the penalty box.
Your team should be at LEAST 1 point less than what they have right now, and that would already mean that they lost the Scudetto.

Inter haven’t been red carded all season, even when Skriniar and Co decides to murder every opposing CF. Brozovic should have been sent off in the Coppa Final as well.

Always chirping at other fanbases, but not looking at themselves in the mirror. You lot are just as bad as what you say other fans are.

  25. If Orsato had such a nightmare, then why isn’t he suspended like all those dumb refs who actually made REAL mistakes?

Maybe its only being criticized by one set of fans 😛

Yet another propaganda piece by a newspaper who favors one team above all others.

  26. @Francesco
My point, Francesco, if you had the intelligence to understand it, is that he is an Inter fan and it doesn’t effect his decisions. Honestly, some of you need to get a life with this referee obsession.
