Prime Minister Viktor Orban has reportedly offered to host the Supercoppa Italiana in Hungary, ready to pay around €8m for the game.

La Repubblica details how the leaders of the Italian game are considering the idea but some are opposed to the concept due to political reasons, including Lega Serie A president Lorenzo Casini. Those in favour of playing in Hungary include Milan and Inter, who’d gladly save themselves a 5000 kilometre journey to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.

Orban has offered to pay around €8m to host the match at the Pancho Arena in Felcsút, a town of almost 2000 inhabitants which sits 35 kilometres from Budapest where the Hungarian Prime Minister grew up. There are more seats in the stadium, 4000, than inhabitants of the town.

When the stadium was built in 2012, much of the population condemned the build, suggesting it was a ‘monument to corruption and megalomania’.

The ball is now in the court of Italian football, who have to decide whether to accept the proposal or not.
