World Cup winner Paolo Rossi passed away one year ago today. His wife Federica, teammates from 1982 and the FIGC attend the anniversary at FIFA’s museum in Zurich.

On this day in 2020, Rossi died at the age of 64 and the FIGC President Gabriele Gravina, together with some of his teammates from the 1982 World Cup, will celebrate his memory in Zurich.

Rossi, who died of lung cancer, was a national hero in Italy and will always be remembered for his performances at the World Cup in Spain.

The former Juventus, Perugia, Vicenza, Milan and Hellas Verona striker scored six times in the 1982 World Cup, including the first goal in the 3-1 win over West Germany in the Final of the competition.

His wife, Federica Cappelletti, will also participate in the event and the former striker’s companion spoke to RTL 102.5.

She has written the book called ‘Forever the two of us – Our words of love’, about her relationship with the former striker. She explained it was a therapeutic but painful experience to write their story.

“Writing the book was a therapy for me, wanting to leave Paolo on paper making him indelible in some way,” she explained. “During the last days in hospital we talked a lot about us: we watched many pictures of moments we shared and at a certain point he asked me not to forget our love and not to disperse it.

“From that moment, I wondered what the best way would be not to disperse it, even if in my heart it would remain forever. I wanted something more for my daughters too, so that they would continue to live it over time and realise the love that generated them.

“I started writing these memories right away. When the publisher asked me to write this book I thought about it a bit, because I knew it would be very painful, as it was.

“Whole mornings crying when the girls didn’t see me, but it was also therapeutic because I threw out so much pain.”

  1. I recall that superb WC with Rossi darting about, had just gotten back from Italy and was there a year actually so could feel that homegrown energy.

Great to see FI put this article up unlike that imbecile at boot awards claiming to forget about Rossi.
