36-year-old veteran Lorenzo De Silvestri and former Atalanta midfielder Remo Freuler are the only members of the current Bologna squad who have previously beaten Wednesday’s Champions League opponents Liverpool away at Anfield.

Vincenzo Italiano will be leading the Rossoblu into their first away game in the Champions League or European Cup since the preliminary rounds of the 1964-65 campaign on Wednesday night.

The Champions League is a new experience for the vast majority of the Bologna squad, and for coach Vincenzo Italiano, but De Silvestri got his first run out in the competition all the way back in the 2007-08 season.

Two years later, during the 2009-10 campaign, De Silvestri was part of the Fiorentina team that won back-to-back matches against Liverpool in the Champions League group stages.

He lined up as a starter when La Viola beat Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield on December 9, 2009, with goals coming from Martin Jørgensen and Alberto Gilardino on that occasion.

Remo Freuler also started during Atalanta’s 2-0 victory away against Liverpool in the Champions League back in 2020, but he and the team had already been beaten 5-0 in Bergamo a few weeks prior.
