Onana: ‘Inter-Benfica important for history of this club’

Andre Onana shares the credit for his six Champions League clean sheets with the Inter defence and hopes for another against Benfica. ‘We know the importance of this match for the history of this club.’

It kicks off at San Siro at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

As the first leg was a commanding 2-0 victory for the Nerazzurri in Lisbon, thanks to Nicolò Barella’s header and a Romelu Lukaku penalty, they can even afford to lose by a one-goal margin tonight and still sweep through to the semi-final.

“It’s not over yet, I am excited and we are ready to continue what we started in the first leg,” Onana told Inter TV.

“We are Inter and we proved it game after game so far this season in Europe.”

The appointment that awaits them there is the Derby della Madonnina, a repeat of the 2002-03 Champions League semi-final, as Milan eliminated Napoli 2-1 on aggregate last night.

Inter are struggling badly in Serie A, but in the Champions League have kept six clean sheets in nine games, conceding only against Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

“Clean sheets are important, but the credit doesn’t just go to me, it goes to all the defence. It is our objective to do it again tonight.”

There was a scuffle in training yesterday between Onana and Marcelo Brozovic, so have they resolved their differences?

“It was just a show we put on because we knew the cameras were there,” grinned Onana on Amazon Prime Italia.

“Everything is fine.”

There were so many fans rushing into the street to cheer on the team bus that it was delayed in its journey to San Siro.

“We saw the support of the fans on our way to the stadium. We are so fired up, we know the importance of this match for the history of this club and we will give our all.”

It could be the first time Inter have reached the Champions League semi-final since Jose Mourinho won the Treble in 2010.
