The biggest shock was that coaches Fabio Capello and Johan Cruyff decided to leave out a Laudrup from their respective squads due to foreign quotas.
Fans were robbed of a highly-anticipated encounter between brothers Brian and Michael, and Capello saluted the fact that his side didn’t have to face the firstborn of the two.
Dejan Savicevic and Daniele Massaro took on roles as protagonists early on, as the former stormed into the penalty area and somehow found the Italian on his own at the far post.
Massaro, who was the Diavolo’s top scorer in Serie A with 11 goals, calmly put away the ball that fell neatly at his feet and scored his third of the competition.
Right before half-time, Roberto Donadoni found Massaro again and a great finish from 11 yards tied him with another absentee of the evening, Jean-Pierre Papin, on four Champions League goals.
Savicevic made sure the match was more or less done and dusted when he stole a bouncing ball off left-back Sergi Barjuan and deftly lobbed Andoni Zubizarreta from the edge of the area to make it 3-0, only three minutes into the second half.
When holding midfielder Desailly stormed forward and defender Albert Ferrer lagged the rest of the Blaugrana’s defensive line to keep him onside, it ended in raptures and Milan could celebrate their fifth European Cup and first of three Champions League crowns.
