On this day in 2003, Alessandro Del Piero scored one of the best goals of his career as Juventus beat Piacenza 2-0 at the Stadio delle Alpi.

The Bianconeri were the defending champions, and had won three matches in a row going into the match.

However, Marcello Lippi’s side were sitting fourth when they kicked off against the Papaveri, the result of a wobble around November and December.

The Old Lady needed a win, and it was their captain who opened the scoring after just nine minutes.

Gianluca Zambrotta swung the ball into the box from the left flank, possibly looking for the head of David Trezeguet.

The ball cross fell short of the Frenchman, but Del Piero was on hand to meet it.

Pinturicchio leapt with both feet off the ground, meeting the ball on the volley with the outside of his right foot.

With Paolo Orlandoni off his line, Del Piero almost lobbed the ball over him and into the net, setting Juve on their way.

The team did not celebrate, however, in recognition of the death of legendary President Gianni Agnelli just a few days previously.

Pavel Nedved doubled their lead just before half-time, and Lippi’s men would go on to retain the Scudetto, returning to the top of the table with a 2-1 win at Parma in Week 21.
