World Cup winner Claudio Gentile warns “now the real work starts” for Italy and claims they are struggling to bring through defenders.

Italy have secured their place at Euro 2020 with flying colours, winning nine out of nine qualifiers, and they will look to make it a perfect 10 against Armenia this evening.

Despite that, Gentile told ANSA: “It’s always nice to win, but now the real work starts.

Italy have secured their place at Euro 2020 with flying colours, winning nine out of nine qualifiers, and they will look to make it a perfect 10 against Armenia this evening.

Despite that, Gentile told ANSA: “It’s always nice to win, but now the real work starts.

“The road hasn’t been easy, but they deserved to qualify. Now we’ll see which role Italy will play at the European Championship.

“The foundations are there, now we await the results. It won’t be easy to progress in the tournament.”

The Azzurri have a plethora of talent coming through in midfield and attack, yet the former Juventus man sees no such case at the back.

Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci [pictured] are now the wrong side of 30, as is new boy Francesco Acerbi.

“We’ve been talking about it for a few years now, and you feel like this when you need to change something.

“I can’t name a proper defender [coming through] when I look at the squad today.

“This can cause some negative results, if you don’t have players who batten down the hatches.”
