Italy international Angelo Ogbonna hopes to return to action before the end of the season following a knee injury.

The former Torino and Juventus defender suffered a knee injury in November after a great start to the season with West Ham. His recovery is continuing as expected so the Italy international hopes to return to action before the end of the season.

“We are in line with my recovery path, so I hope I can leave a good mark before the end of the season,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

He will watch West Ham take on Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals today. What game does he expect?

“I have positive feelings, we have a balanced team to face Lyon with no fear following a win in the Premier League. We can be considered favourite playing at home. We’d like to win the first leg, but we respect Lyon. A team with a big potential that deserves the Champions League.”

Atalanta are the only Serie A club left in the competition. La Dea will face RB Leipzig in Germany today. They can only meet West Ham in the Final. Ogbonna, 33, has been playing in London since 2015. He collected 86 appearances in Serie A before joining the Premier League outfit.

“Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world, very competitive,” he said.

“That’s why it’s so fascinating. We are doing our best. We’ve tried to cause trouble for big teams over the last two seasons. We deserve to be at this stage this season.”

Ogbonna has played 13 games with the Azzurri and his last appearance dates back to September 2016 with Giampiero Ventura in charge. This past summer, he admitted that he was ‘surprised and embittered’ for being snubbed from the Azzurri’s Euro 2020 squad. “Perhaps, Roberto Mancini didn’t consider West Ham’s season,” he told Il Corriere della Sera.
