Verona have sacked their coach Gabriele Cioffi after Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Salernitana.

Hellas Verona FC announces that they have relieved Gabriele Cioffi from the role of coach of the first team,” the Gialloblu said in an official statement.

“The club thanks Mr Cioffi and his staff for their work.”

Cioffi had been appointed in the summer, signing a two-year deal at the Stadio Bentegodi.

The Gialloblu have only collected five points in the opening nine games of the season. They’ve won one match, drawn two and lost six, scoring eight goals and conceding 17.

The former defender saw the best players of last season leave during the summer transfer campaign.

Giovanni Simeone, Gianluca Caprari and Antonin Barak all walked out of the club after a brilliant season under Igor Tudor.

Verona had also sacked their coach Eusebio Di Francesco last season after the opening three matches and Tudor led the team through one of the best Serie A campaigns in recent years, settling the record for the most goals scored by the club in a single campaign.

Diego Lopez is in pole position to replace Cioffi.

The ex-Udinese coach is the fourth Serie A tactician to be sacked this term after Marco Giampaolo (Sampdoria), Sinisa Mihajlovic (Bologna) and Giovanni Stroppa (Monza).
