UEFA have formally opened disciplinary proceedings against Roma coach Jose Mourinho for insulting referee Anthony Taylor after the Europa League Final defeat to Sevilla.
A statement from the UEFA disciplinary committee today outlined a series of charges against both clubs following a fiery and often over the top Final at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.
Both clubs were charged with throwing of objects and lighting of fireworks from their crowd, plus improper conduct of the team.
On top of that, Sevilla were also charged with invasion of the field of play, while Roma were charged with acts of damage and crowd disturbances.
Specifically, Mourinho alone was charged with “insulting/abusive language against a match official.”
He was caught on camera hurling abuse at referee Taylor in the car park after the game.
This sort of behaviour, as well as numerous mentions of the refereeing in interviews and the press conference, helped create an atmosphere that the next day saw Roma fans accost Taylor and his family at the airport in Budapest, pushing, jostling and shouting at them, with one fan even throwing a chair.
According to Sky Sport Italia, two fans were arrested for those disturbances, one was released and the other remains in custody.
