Udinese have officially fired Andrea Sottil after a dismal start to the Serie A season and are expected to bring back Gabriele Cioffi.

The decision was already in the air throughout the day following last night’s 1-1 home draw with Lecce, but was made official this evening.

Sottil had taken the job over the summer of 2022 and took the Friulani to a comfortable mid-table finish last season.

However, he is still without a victory this term in Serie A, managing only six draws and three defeats.

In total, Sottil was given 50 competitive matches on the Udinese bench, overseeing 13 victories, 19 draws and 18 losses.

Sottil is fired along with his staff, Gianluca Cristaldi, Salvatore Gentile, Jacopo Alberti and Eugenio Vassalle.

Cioffi is in pole position and likely to make his debut this weekend with a trip to Monza on Sunday afternoon.

It is a debut in name only, because he already has plenty of experience on the Udinese bench, first as assistant manager to Luca Gotti from 2020 to December 2021, then promoted to the main job until the end of the 2021-22 season.

He started last term at Hellas Verona, but was fired after just 10 matches in October 2022.

  1. Musical chairs in Serie A again.
They keep hiring and firing the same coaches over and over again.
Expect to see Sottil back within a year.
Farce of a league in many ways.

  2. Udinese are a microcosm of everything wrong with Calcio. Over reliance on uncapped, unproven foreigners over promising young Italians, boring and negative style of play and little to no ambition to actually improve year to year.
