Serie A side Spezia have officially terminated their contract with coach Thiago Motta by mutual consent, so can now hire Luca Gotti.

Thiago Motta had only taken the job last summer and signed a three-year contract, but after securing Serie A safety with 10 wins, six draws and 22 defeats, they decided to go their separate ways.

The decision was made weeks ago, but negotiations took a while to work out how best to terminate the deal early.

It’s reported Thiago Motta was happy to leave money behind as long as his staff received their remuneration.

“Spezia Calcio announces that an agreement has been reached regarding the terms of the consensual termination of the contracts of coach Thiago Motta and his technical staff.

The club would like to thank them all for their achievements.”

Spezia have already chosen their next coach as Gotti, who was fired by Udinese in December 2021.

Gotti spent most of his career as an assistant manager, including for Roberto Donadoni at Cagliari, Parma and Bologna, then Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea before 10 games under Igor Tudor at Udinese.

He was promoted to the main Udinese job in October 2019, initially to tide them over until a new coach was found, but was eventually convinced to stay on as head tactician.
