Genoa have officially appointed Andriy Shevchenko as their new coach with a contract to June 2024. ‘Kicking off this new adventure to bring back Genoa to its great history.’

Davide Ballardini was fired last night following the 2-2 draw with Empoli at the Stadio Castellani on Friday evening.

The Grifone are rattling around in the relegation zone and look to Shevchenko to lead the new project, now that the club has been taken over by American firm 777 Partners.

“Kicking off this new adventure to bring back Genoa to its great history,” wrote Shevchenko on social media.

Genoa released a statement announcing the former Ukraine national manager has signed a contract to June 2024.

As a player, he is no stranger to Serie A, with two different spells at Milan from 1999-2006 and again in 2008-09 on loan from Chelsea, during which he won the 2004 Ballon d’Or.

He retired at Dinamo Kiev in 2012 becoming assistant manager to Mykhaylo Fomenko on the Ukraine bench from February to July 2016, before his promotion to the senior role.

Sheva left in August 2021 after 52 competitive matches in charge of his country, in which he took them to UEFA EURO 2020.

He oversaw 25 victories, 13 draws and 14 defeats, in which Ukraine scored 71 goals and conceded 62.
