Sassuolo have officially purchased striker Agustin Alvarez from Penarol, tying him to a five-year contract.

The centre-forward flew in this week for his medical and put pen to paper on the deal for a new stage of his career in Serie A.

He only turned 21 last month and is already a senior Uruguay international with four caps to his name, scoring one goal.

In fact, Alvarez was on target on his senior Uruguay debut, a 4-2 World Cup qualifying victory over Bolivia in September 2021.

The deal is believed to be worth circa €12m plus another €2m in performance-related bonuses, with Penarol owed 20 per cent of any future sale.

A product of the Penarol youth academy, he found the net 34 times with 10 assists in 89 competitive matches for the club.

With Alvarez’s arrival, it becomes more likely that Sassuolo will sell their Italy international striker Gianluca Scamacca.

He has requests from Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, but nobody has yet reached the €50m asking price for the hitman.
