Domenico Berardi suffers injury to his achilles tendon during the Serie A match between Hellas Verona and Sassuolo on March 3, 2024.

Sassuolo confirm Domenico Berardi has suffered a ‘complete lesion of the Achilles tendon’ so he will undergo surgery on Tuesday morning.

The Italy international suffered a season-ending injury on Sunday during Sassuolo’s 1-0 loss to Hellas Verona.

He had returned from an injury, starting his first game in nearly two months.

“Exams undergone this morning by Domenico Berardi highlighted a complete lesion of the Achilles tendon in his right leg,” the Neroverdi said in a statement.

“The footballer will undergo surgery tomorrow [Tuesday] morning from doctor Stefano Zaffagnini at the Casa di Cura Toniolo in Bologna.”

Berardi’s injury means the 29-year-old will miss the rest of the season, including Euro 2024 with Italy.

It is a massive blow to the Neroverdi who have just hired Davide Ballardini as their new coach.

Sassuolo lost five games from the last six played without Berardi and were beaten by Hellas Verona on Sunday. Poland international Karol Świderski scored the winner for the Scaligeri in the second half, minutes after Berardi’s injury.

The Italy international has nine goals and three assists in 17 Serie A games this term.

His compatriot Leonardo Spinazzola suffered a similar injury during Euro 2020 and remained out of action for 10 months.
