As expected, it has been confirmed that the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza cannot be torn down, so Inter and Milan are looking to build a new stadium away from San Siro.

The clubs had for several years proposed the plans to build a new arena essentially in the car park of the current stadium, then knock down the existing structure.

However, they faced furious resistance from the local authorities and some sections of Government, who consider the Stadio Meazza to be a monument of historic importance.

It had already been noted for several weeks that the committee was leaning towards making that legally binding by banning the demolition of the stadium.

That has now been confirmed, blocking destruction of the second tier, because in 2026 it will be 70 years old and therefore can be covered by the historic monuments and cultural icons laws.

What that ultimately means is that Inter and Milan will have to abandon the San Siro area of Milan and build their new arenas elsewhere.

That is already in progress, as Milan are focusing on San Donato Milanese, while Inter have chosen a piece of land in Rozzano.
