The 23-year-old already waved a Giallorossi scarf as he entered the Villa Stuart clinic for his tests on Thursday morning, despite interest from Juventus, Inter, Lazio and Napoli.

It’s a huge profit for Atalanta, who activated their option to buy the Italo-Canadian from Benfica for just €5m following a loan spell.

This season, Cristante scored 12 goals with four assists in 47 competitive games.

He came up through the Milan youth academy, but was sold to Benfica for €5.2m in September 2014.

Roma sporting director Monchi has already secured Ante Coric from Dinamo Zagreb and Porto defender Ivan Marcano.
