Roma have confirmed that goalkeeper Robin Olsen cut short his Sheffield United loan spell and has joined Aston Villa with option to buy.

The Sweden international just turned 32 this month and was purchased from FC Copenhagen in the summer of 2018 for €9m.

He proved to be a massive flop, sent out on various loan spells at Cagliari, Everton and Sheffield United.

Olsen was meant to remain in Sheffield until the end of the season, but interrupted that experience by mutual consent.

Instead, he has now signed for Aston Villa on loan with an option to buy at the end of the campaign.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the option to buy is worth €3.5m and Villa will pay his full salary for the next six months.

Olsen still has a contract with Roma that runs to June 2023.

He made only 35 competitive appearances in the Giallorossi jersey, conceding 58 goals and keeping just seven clean sheets.
