Leandro Paredes has officially completed a permanent transfer to Roma and will be wearing the No.16 next season: ‘I never would’ve allowed it to happen without Daniele De Rossi’s permission.’
The Argentinean midfielder has returned to the capital on a permanent transfer from PSG, believed to be worth circa €2.5m. He has signed a contract until June 2025 at the Stadio Olimpico.
The 29-year-old spent the last season on loan at Juventus and has now returned to the capital after scoring four goals in 54 competitive appearances for the Giallorossi between 2014 and 2017.
Paredes will be wearing Roma’s No.16 in 2023-24. It’s an iconic number for the Giallorossi given that it previously belonged to club legend De Rossi.
In his first interview with the club, Paredes revealed he had spoken to the ex-Giallorossi midfielder, asking permission to get his squad number.
“I never would’ve allowed it to happen without Daniele’s permission,” said Paredes who had played with De Rossi at Roma.
“Coming back to Rome is always a special thing, but doing so now as a Roma player is even more special,” continued the ex-Juventus and Empoli midfielder.
“I’d like to thank the fans for welcoming me and Roma for bringing me back to the club where I launched my career in Europe. Last year was an incredibly happy one for me with the World Cup, so now I want to keep tasting success and I’m convinced I can do just that with this team.”
“As soon as he heard that we were interested, Leandro made it clear that his target was to return to Roma,” explained Roma director Tiago Pinto.
“His strong willpower made us even more convinced that we should bring him back to the Giallorossi and we’re delighted to see him back in Roma colours.
“Ever since his first stint here, he has matured and gained international experience, combined with his knowledge of Italian football and his technical attributes, we’re sure this will all prove to be crucial and strengthen our squad.”
Paredes landed in Rome on Tuesday alongside Renato Sanches who will complete an initial loan move with an option to buy for €15m.
