Victor Osimhen will not take part in the Africa Cup of Nations after contracting COVID.

The 23-year-old Napoli forward was called up by the Nigerian national team for the tournament despite his recent cheekbone fracture, but now he’s been forced to pull out following a positive COVID test.

As reported by Calciomercato.com, Osimhen has officially pulled out of the Africa Cup of Nations, with the player already informing coach Augustine Eguavoen. The decision has been taken to safeguard his health and to avoid any kind of friction or legal consequences between Napoli and the Nigerian Football Federation. Olympiacos striker Henry Onyekuru has been called up in his place.

Osimhen is currently in Lagos and he’ll return to Napoli after testing negative for COVID. Once in the Campania capital, he will undergo medical tests with Dr. Gianpaolo Tartaro to evaluate his physical condition. Should these tests go well then he’ll be able to play with Napoli next month.
