Inter have officially announced that they have handed a new and improved long-term contract to captain and recent Copa America winner Lautaro Martinez, after many months of negotiations.
Official: Lautaro Martinez signs new contract extension
El Toro has put pen to paper on a new five-year deal, which will tie him to the Nerazzurri until the summer of 2029, when he will be 31 years of age.
According to updates from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Martinez will now take home an annual salary of around €9m, plus performance-related bonuses.
The 2023-24 Scudetto-winning captain had just under two years remaining on his current deal, which would have expired in 2026.
Martinez and the club had been discussing the possibility of extending the contract all throughout the 2023-24 season, but the two parties only began negotiating on the specific figures in the spring.
Since joining Inter in the summer of 2018, Martinez has gone on to score 129 goals in all competitions for the club, including a record of exactly a goal every other game in Serie A with a tally of 103 from 206 outings.
Martinez is now a two-time Serie A winner as well, after triumphant campaigns in 2020-21 and 2023-24. He finished the season as Capocannoniere las time out, netting 24 goals from 33 league appearances on his way to the title.
He has not featured for the Nerazzurri yet this summer, as he was part of the Argentina squad that beat Colombia 1-0 in the Copa America final in the United States back in June. He finished the tournament as the competition’s highest goalscorer, and netted the crucial goal in extra-time to bring home Argentina’s second major trophy in two years.
He did return to training last week, though, and is expected to be involved with Simone Inzaghi’s first team squad for the season opener against Genoa at the weekend, although it has not been confirmed if he is in line to start.
