Napoli and Mario Rui have agreed to mutually terminate the defender’s contract, the club announced on Monday.
The full-back went from making 28 appearances across all competitions last season to failing to pick up a single Serie A minute this season under Antonio Conte, as he was put out of the team since the coach’s arrival.
The player’s contract was due to expire in the summer of 2026, but his limited playing time convinced both parties to opt for a mutual termination before its natural end, leaving him free to join any other club as a free agent.

Napoli and Mario Rui agree on mutual contract termination
“SSC Napoli and Mario Rui Silva Duarte announce that they have mutually agreed to terminate the existing contract as of December 30, 2024,” a statement published on the Partenopei’s official website read.
“Napoli thank Mario Rui for his commitment during his years in the blue jersey, wishing him the best for the continuation of his career.”

The Portuguese left-back joined the Partenopei in 2017 and played 173 Serie A games for the club, also picking up 22 league appearances in his side’s title-winning campaign under coach Luciano Spalletti in 2022-2023.

this is shocking and disrespectful. this is one of Napoli’s most loyal player. the Mario Rui plays with everything; he plays with all his heart. Conte froze him out and now this?
Totally agree, Dee One.
As a Napoli supporter, I thought Mario Rui personafied what made Napoli a title winning team. hunger, desire and high energy. Always a team player and a warrior on the park, a silent leader. Wish him all the best. Grazie tanto, Mario 👏
@dee one : this thing … not the 1st time, won’t be the last time either. All clubs have done this, not only Napoli.
