Napoli have officially announced the signing of Brazilian winger David Neres on a permanent deal from Benfica.

Official: Napoli sign Neres from Benfica

The 27-year-old has moved on a permanent transfer at a reported cost of €28m including bonuses. Recent reports suggest that he will pocket around €3m per season in wages.

Neres becomes Napoli’s fourth permanent signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Alessandro Buongiorno from Torino, Rafa Marin from Real Madrid and Leonardo Spinazzola, who joined as a free agent after the expiry of his contract with Roma

The winger conducted his medical with Napoli over the weekend, but he and the club still had to discuss the final details of his contract, with a couple of minor issues cropping up around image rights. That led to Napoli delaying their announcement by a day.

As is customary for Napoli transfers, club President Aurelio De Laurentiis was the first person to officially announce the completion of the signing.

Neres came through the academy of his hometown team, Sao Paolo, before moving to Europe as a 20-year-old in 2017 to join Ajax. He would go on to score 37 league goals from 121 appearances with the first team.

He signed for Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk in January of 2022, but did not make a competitive appearance and then left the country following the Russian invasion. Neres joined Benfica for a reported fee of €15.3m later that year.
