Portugal have appointed Roberto Martinez as their new coach after spending several weeks chasing Roma boss José Mourinho.

The Portuguese federation has confirmed the appointment of former Everton and Belgium coach Roberto Martinez.

The Spanish tactician had resigned after Belgium’s disappointing World Cup campaign that saw the Red Devils being eliminated in the group stage.

It is no secret that Portugal’s primary target was Roma boss Mourinho who had been linked with the job since Fernando Santos left in December after Qatar 2022.

However, Roma did not want to part company with the Special One nor allow him to take a dual role. The same goes for Mourinho who is not willing to leave Roma before the end of the season.

The Special One was also in Brazil’s sights but wants to end the season with the Giallorossi.

Whether he will remain in charge of Roma until the end of his contract in 2024 is another story. Repubblica reported in December that Mourinho would sit down with the club’s board at the end of the season to decide on his future. Sky Sport has recently reported that the 59-year-old is unhappy with the club’s transfer activity.

  1. Martinez is not only the luckiest coach ever, but he clearly has the best agent in the world as well. Maybe his negative style will suit Portugal though.

  2. I think the “Special One” is not so special anymore for Roma. Roma play not to loose but not to win. He has a berth of attacking talent on his team which he does not know how to use.

  3. Martinez has done well. This is another top nation he is coaching. Not quite the elite but well above average. It could be argued that Belgium underachieved under his tenure. But they did get a third at the WC in Russia.

Regarding Roma, it would be great if Mourinho completes his three years at the club – and they spend some Euros.

  4. I CANT wait for Mou to leave Roma, so i can start watching them again. I had to turn off the conference league final at 75th minute because Mou ball is so excruciating to watch
