As expected, Nikola Milenkovic has extended his contract with Fiorentina, despite Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United talks, but only to 2023.

The 23-year-old’s current deal was due to expire at the end of this season, so a summer sale for €18m plus bonuses was always on the cards.

However, after weeks of negotiations in which he at first seemed close to West Ham, then instead to a different Premier League club in Tottenham, there was a sudden shift.

Instead, Milenkovic has officially signed a new contract with Fiorentina that runs to June 2023.

There had been some doubts as to whether the deal would be to 2023 or 2024, so this short extension leaves the situation open for next summer.

The change of plan was prompted by the departure of teammate German Pezzella towards Real Betis, where he flew out today for his medical and €3.5m plus bonuses transfer.

Milenkovic will now form a new partnership with his fellow Serbia international Matija Nastasic, who arrives from Schalke 04 for a minimal fee.
