Napoli hero Diego Maradona has sensationally announced that he will be staying on as coach of Gimnasia La Plata after all.

The Argentine initially stepped down from the position after it emerged President Gabriel Pellegrino would not be running for re-election.

However, the fans put on a public demonstration, calling for Maradona to return, and their wishes have been granted.

“It makes me very happy to announce that I’ll stay on as coach of Gimnasia,” he wrote on Instagram.

The 59-year-old was only hired in September and had improved results, winning three of his last five games to lift them off the bottom of the Superliga.
